WATCH: How Fork Becomes Portable Door Lock In Low-Tech Security Alternative!
Home security, like most other aspects of 21st century life, has moved into the digital age, but with new technologies come new concerns.
Most
of the new advances in home security technology promise convenience and peace
of mind that simply wasn't available before. The Lockitron, for example, is
a device that allows you to lock and unlock your home's doors remotely via your
smartphone or computer. It notifies you when someone knocks on your door, and
it "can sense if your door has been unlocked, dutifully notifying you immediately"
according to Mashable.
A
computerized locking mechanism controlled via your smartphone might
seem more secure than a traditional deadbolt; however, it really might not
be. In 2014, Network World reported about Insecam, a website that
has gained access to over 70,000 home security cameras and broadcasts live
footage from inside people's homes without their knowledge.
"When
consumers trade control for online convenience, security usually suffers,"
confirmed USA Today tech writer John Shinal late last year.
In
lieu of increasing online vulnerability, some have turned to low-tech security
options -- like placing tape over a laptop's webcam to protect privacy in case of
a cyber attack.
In
the video below, YouTuber Phil Crockett demonstrates how to use a fork to
create a makeshift deadbolt, a helpful trick for locking doors that may not
have lock mechanisms of their own. Portable door locks aren't a new invention, but
Crockett's solution is cost-free -- assuming you have a fork and some basic
tools.
Crockett
notes on his YouTube page that his fork deadbolt was never intended to be a
permanent home security fix, but instead he recommends its use as an added
security measure in places where locks are often missing or broken -- like
hotels and bathrooms.
Those
interested in trying Crockett's homemade portable lock can see the steps needed
in the video below.
