Meet the Mangalitsa Pig: A Rare Wooly Breed That Looks Like a Sheep and Acts Like a Dog! [WATCH]
Meet the latest internet sensation,
the Mangalitsa pig! These extraordinary and lovable pigs appear to be a
pig/sheep hybrid! The fuzzy pig is an Hungarian breed that tragically
faced extinction while its native land struggled under communism.
Following the fall of the Berlin
Wall in 1989, Peter Toth, an animal geneticist made the vital
decision to purchase the last known Mangalitsa pig in a last ditch attempts
to save them from extinction!
These pigs are unique in more ways
than just their looks. Their behaviour is just as extraordinary as their furry
appearance. The Mangalitsa pig is also known to be very friendly and
acts like a dog! They even display behaviours such as playing with you and
following you around!
There is a reason these pigs look
the way they do. In the mid nineteenth century the Mangalitsa pig was
developed by cross breeding Romanian breeds from Szalonta and Bakony with
the Serbian Sumadija breed.
The lard that the Mangalitsa
pig would produce was in high demand. But once the Austro-Hungarian empire coppiced
then the demand for the lard dropped significantly. One of the main
reasons for this drop was not necessarily due to a lower demand, but
also because of stricter policies and laws set by Hungarian communism.
Heath Putnam, Wilhelm W. Kohl and
Mosefund Farms are some of the breeders in the U.S. that have only recently
also started importing the Mangalitsa pig onto American soil.
